Day 17- A book you've read that changed your views on something

Wow, a book I read that changed my viewpoint on something.

I could go deep on this one and get into all the ideas and opinions I have on something like the bible,

BUT... I'm going to stay in the shallow end and go with the Twilight series and how reading that made me question a lot of people's sanity.

First of all, I wonder how many parents read this series before buying it for their tween daughters. I have seen 10 yr olds reading this!!!!! AUGH!

The story is decent, the writing, sub-par, but holy carp! the obsessive relationship between Bella and Edward borderlines on abusive! What pre-pubescent, pubescent girl needs this kind of "love" story thrust at her like it's totally ok?! What do we want to teach our daughters?!

Second, as you read it you feel slightly like you are voyeuristically peeking in on a 30yr old woman's wet dream. And you basically are! The story is just shy of a romance novel, (no heaving bosoms here) but it also doesn't leave a whole lot to the imagination, there is a LOT of sexual tension, far too much for a young girl to be reading I think.

I found it frightening that people were using the popularity of the series as an excuse to buy mulitiple copies for school libraries. "At least it gets the kids reading" is the biggest excuse for it I've heard. Whatever happened to all those other book series that are actually geared toward younger teens, and written age-appropriate?!

I haven't read Twilight. But the issues you pointed out are the issues I have with it as well, just from what I know of it. It seems to encourage unhealthy relationships, and it's kind of like porn for chicks--Edward is an unrealistic fantasy man, much like porn stars are unrealistic fantasy women. Barf.

So here's a good one for ya--I started reading the Bible--really reading it, not just bits here and there--and it changed my views on the Bible. I'll leave it at that for now.

I was recently given The Book of Mormon. I plan on re-reading the bible as well as delving into that one. That way I can have an educated discussion with the Mormon missionaries that gave me the book. Should be fun!
I think every time you read the bible you find new meaning in it. Different parts will speak to you each time.
