Green thumbs

So I've got a garden started. Actually, it started about 6 weeks ago with a table full of sprouting boxes, some dirt, seeds, and a whole lot of hope (fingers crossed and everything). The kids got involved with Alicia laying claim to the peas, and Dylan calling carrots. I was left in charge of everything else, peppers (both banana, and bell), basil, rosemary, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, red leaf lettuce, asparagus, and tomato.
Hubby was kind enough to build me some awesome raised beds for on the front porch. We don't really have access to the yard here and I really wanted fresh veggies. Most of the sprouts are in the ground now and on their way, I can't wait to make dinner out of our harvest!

Now, if you've never done asparagus before, let me tell you it is quite an experience! I didn't know anything about how they grew, so I cheated and bought a start from a local nursery instead of trying it from seed. I should have researched it some first.
Once the stalk of asparagus breaks the surface, it will grow fast, up to a foot in a day! It was a little disconcerting to wake up one morning to find this cute little sprout of a stalk peeking out at me, and to return at dinner time to a full 8 inch long stalk! (seriously, I looked around to see if I was being punked) After that I got online and did the research I should have started with. Apparently this is normal, and for the first year, you are to let them be, and they don't stop growing. This little guy now is about 3-4 tall and has a few buddies hanging out with him, it no longer looks like asparagus, but it does look really cool. Like some sort of alien being. The down side is, we can't actually eat the asparagus for a couple more seasons, however, once you start harvesting it for eating, the plant comes back every year for over 20 years! How cool is that?!

Now I just have to remember to water them all. : )
